Be a (real) crew member

Become a crew member on Kirana – work for a berth on a long-term sailing trip!

We are Michael, Sheila, our little son Miro and our dogs B’Elanna and Medo. We have been living on our sailing yacht Kirana for several years and are looking for another crew member who would like to join us and take an active part in life on board.

If you love the sea, are curious about life on board and are ready to lend a hand, this might be exactly the adventure you are looking for.

Who are we looking for?

  • Sailing experience is not required. Interest in sailing and the willingness to learn and help are the most important things.
  • You should be roughly our age (mid-20s to late 30s) and comfortable with dogs and children; our two dogs and our little son are always with us.
  • Team spirit and friendliness are central for us. We live as a family in a small space and are looking for someone who appreciates this open, family-like atmosphere.
  • Personality: alternative-minded? Great. But you should also be stable and reliable.
  • You should be willing to take sailing watches, stand at the helm and help with all work that comes up, from sailing manoeuvres and boat maintenance to everyday tasks on board.
  • We are looking for someone who will stay longer term, ideally at least one season or more.
  • Our lifestyle is rather low budget, so do not expect luxury travel, but a simple, relaxed life on the water.

What do we expect financially?

  • You cover your own costs. This includes personal expenses such as health and travel insurance as well as all private costs. Important: you should have enough money available to interrupt the trip and fly home in an emergency, for example after an accident.
  • You do not have to contribute to the boat kitty for fuel, marina and boat costs as long as your presence does not create additional costs.
  • However, if we make a special detour or mission explicitly for you, it would be fair if you covered the costs connected with it. Do not worry, this is not about every single tack, but about major detours.

Helping with YouTube and video

We document our life on Kirana on our YouTube channel. If you are interested in video editing, camera work or content creation, we would be happy to have your support. You are also welcome to use our camera equipment for your own projects. Prior experience is not necessary; you should simply enjoy creative work or want to learn it.

Working on board

If you have a home-office job or can work remotely, it is easily possible to do so from aboard Kirana. Your job should be flexible enough that you can sometimes be offline during a passage. We have 5G internet on board, but no Starlink or satellite internet, so you depend on mobile networks.

Languages and culture

On board, we speak German (DE), English (EN) and Croatian (HR). Further language skills are not required, but it can be an advantage if you can communicate in the different countries we travel through.

What do we offer?

  • A life at sea! You become part of our adventure, sail with us through fantastic cruising grounds and experience life on board up close.
  • Work for a berth: You are part of the crew and help out; in return you get a berth on Kirana and become part of our life on board.
  • Long-term experience: You learn not only how to sail, but also how to live on board over months, through seasons and everything that comes with it.
  • Destinations: Mediterranean islands, the Adriatic Sea and possibly farther south. Our base is in Croatia, but we plan to sail throughout the Schengen area.

About us

We have been living for several years on our Bavaria 42, Kirana, which became our home in 2020. Alongside the daily challenges, we enjoy the freedom of the ocean and life in harmony with nature. Our dogs B’Elanna and Medo are always with us too and play a big role on board.

If you can imagine joining us and becoming part of our family, get in touch. Tell us why life at sea appeals to you and what interests you. We are open to beginners and look forward to hearing from you.
